Data center nightmare captured on video

Reliable enterprise-class disk drives are critical for any trustworthy data center.

Redundant storage system designs are necessary.

Failover power and cooling is essential.

But sometimes none of that matters.  This video from Data Center Knowledge of a Vodaphone data center in Turkey demonstrates why remote disaster recovery is just as important as any other investment.  Store whatever data you value both “here” and “there”.

The video starts out almost comical; by Minute Six the situation has become dramatically more serious.

Finding your true spin speed

business-sustainability1Whether its hard disks or fast cars, when it comes to speed, it’s all about revolutions per minute or RPM. Critically important (to the tune of $3M) to Helio Castroneves, 2009 winner of the Indy 500  this past weekend, RPM represents the number of full rotations completed in one minute around a fixed axis

Just as important to IT managers evaluating their disk drive performance and data access time, RPM signifies the fixed spin speed that drives are capable of performing. There’s been some confusion around the capabilities of some manufacturer’s drives being able to vary a drive’s rotational speed during use. The Register recently set the record straight.  . There’s no question that RPM is the measuring stick for performance and is critically important when comparing and contrasting hard disk drives.

IT in India is much more than outsourcing

india

I’ve been noticing a lot of traffic on Seagate’s website on anything related to India. There are more tag searches on that country than any other.

At first I was puzzled. Then I recalled my trip to Asia last year. I wasn’t in India, but I did spend a couple of days with Seagate team members from there. They opened my eyes to the vastness of the country (I really hope to get there some day!), but also the size of the IT industry.

One notable example is the movie industry. It so easy for us in the U.S. to think of one word: Hollywood. In actuality, Bollywood and the local movie industry that has grown up around it is massive. It stands out globally, producing much of the world’s entertainment content. And the Indian movie industry is moving as rapidly as Hollywood is to digital content. Indian movie houses are digitizing rapidly, creating islands of IT that collectively serve hundreds of millions of Indians.

Of course there is a large outsourcing industry in India that also uses lots of storage, but there are also huge conglomerates in every industry serving a domestic market of 2-3X twice the population.

HP, EMC and even 3PAR see the Indian opportunity.

So I’m not so surprised that Indians are curious about Seagate storage. I’d love to hear from any readers in India. What can you tell us aboiut IT and storage in your dynamic country?
