Great article Pete. When will Seagate come out with a SSD? There are literally a dozen different SSD brands out there and I'm surprised seagate has not put out one yet.

Could happen I guess. Two things are different this time around:
1. OEMs have tried and thus far mostly failed in using 2.5" notebook-class drives for the enterprise.
2. There is an enterprise-ready 2.5" 7200 rpm drive ready to go for this market. Early on, there was no enterprise-class 3.5" 7200 rpm drive, so desktop-class drives were brought in. Today most serious 7200 rpm enterprise applications use enterprise versions of that class of drive.

Pete, lots of folks said that the enterprise would never use "consumer" drives - but they are in wide use today. I suspect that 2.5" notebook drives will see a similar adoption once the form factor is widely accepted by enterprise customers.

It's stupid, you may as well just partition the drive and stick your movies on the extra 1.2GB, it results in the same thing and doesn't limit you to 20% of your drive.

I'm not an IT manager but I joined an effort to promote power management but was never able to get the tool working properly.

I experienced a number of times when my attempts to remote boot the PC failed after it went into hibernation mode. I had to drive back to office to turn the PC on manually. After repeated experiences, I gave up and just left my PC on.

IT has to provide a way for the OS and the PC to work together so that remote boot can be performed painlessly and consistently before users will start turning on the power management feature.
